How to Read an IGI Diamond Report: Four Checks

When a product includes a certificate, check who issued it, what it covers and what information it provides. Here is a reading guide using an IGI diamond report as an example.

01. Verify the number on the official website

Enter the report number in Verify Your Report on IGI’s official website, then compare the displayed information with your document. This is one way to verify information. If a document alone cannot establish that it matches your gemstone, ask the seller or a specialist.

02. Read the gemstone type and report scope

Check whether the gemstone is natural or lab-grown and whether the report covers an individual gemstone or a piece of jewelry. Documents supplied with moissanite should not be treated as equivalent to an IGI diamond report.

03. Each of the 4Cs describes a different feature

  • Carat: Weight, not the visible diameter.
  • Color: An assessment of the gemstone’s color.
  • Clarity: An assessment of inclusions and surface characteristics.
  • Cut: An assessment related to the quality of the cut and its interaction with light.

Consider the shape, dimensions and other report details together rather than comparing just one number. The information provided varies by report type.

04. Check how the document relates to the product

For jewelry with several gemstones, such as a bracelet, check which gemstones or parts the document covers. Includes a certificate does not necessarily mean every gemstone has an individual report. When contacting Refind, include the product name and the details you want to confirm.

A grading report helps you understand a gemstone’s characteristics. Use it to understand your purchase, rather than as a guarantee of future resale value.
