Moissanite and lab-grown diamond are both used in jewelry, but they are different gemstones. Understanding the gemstone first makes it easier to compare designs, sizes and product descriptions.
01. Two gemstones, different compositions
Moissanite is silicon carbide (SiC). Lab-grown diamond is crystalline carbon (C), sharing the fundamental chemical, physical and optical properties of natural diamond. Being grown in a laboratory does not make moissanite a diamond.
| What to check | Moissanite | Lab-grown diamonds |
|---|---|---|
| Main composition | Silicon carbide (SiC) | Carbon (C) |
| Gemstone type | Moissanite | Diamond |
| Words to look for in descriptions | Moissanite | Lab-grown / Laboratory-grown |
02. Light and cut affect sparkle
Moissanite is known for its rainbow-colored fire. The sparkle in photos and video also depends on lighting, camera angle, cut and gemstone size. Rather than choosing by one number, look at the overall volume in worn photos and the arrangement and settings in close-ups.
03. Check gemstone, metal and size separately
When choosing Refind jewelry, check the gemstone, base metal, width and length, and any included documents. A color name such as Silver does not identify the metal: read the material details too. Our descriptions distinguish moissanite from lab-grown diamond.
